Snake catcher warns of Ibiza lizard extinction due to predators and litter
Conservationists in Ibiza are sounding the alarm as the island’s native bright blue and green lizards are facing increasing threats of extinction. The main culprits behind this worrying trend are invasive snakes and the litter left behind by tourists.
The bright blue and green Ibiza wall lizards, also known as Podarcis pityusensis, are unique to the Balearic Islands and play a crucial role in the local ecosystem. However, their population has been steadily declining in recent years due to the presence of invasive snakes, such as the North African cat snake, which prey on the lizards.
In addition to the threat posed by invasive predators, the lizards are also facing challenges from the litter left behind by tourists visiting the island. Plastic waste, in particular, poses a significant danger to the lizards as they can become entangled in it or mistake it for food.
Snake catcher Jan Van Duinen, who has been working on the island for over a decade, has been raising awareness about the plight of the Ibiza wall lizards. He has been actively involved in removing invasive snakes from the island and educating tourists about the importance of keeping the environment clean.
Van Duinen warns that if urgent action is not taken to protect the lizards and their habitat, they could disappear from Ibiza altogether. Conservation efforts, such as habitat restoration and stricter regulations on waste management, are needed to ensure the survival of these unique and beautiful creatures.
The decline of the Ibiza wall lizards serves as a stark reminder of the impact that human activities can have on the environment and the delicate balance of ecosystems. It is crucial for visitors to the island to be mindful of their impact and take steps to minimize their footprint to protect the precious wildlife that calls Ibiza home.
Conservationists are urging authorities and tourists alike to take action to preserve the natural beauty and biodiversity of Ibiza for future generations. By working together to address the threats facing the Ibiza wall lizards, we can help ensure that these iconic creatures continue to thrive in their island home.
